China's Build Your Dreams — BYD

China's BYD takes full control of Australian operations

I shared a video recently about BYD dealerships across Australia. Some of the most reliable and affordable rides I’ve seen!

My test drive went smoothly, and many impressive features come standard. Crazy how stepping outside the U.S. makes you realize how much we overpay for what’s a simple necessity elsewhere.

Economist Richard Wolff delivers a piercing analysis of how U.S. trade policy, especially tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles, reveals a deeper contradiction at the heart of American capitalism. While politicians claim to protect national interests by shielding domestic industries, Wolff argues these moves often erode the very economic foundations they claim to defend. It’s official! China’s BYD surpasses Elon Musk’s Tesla as the world’s largest seller of electric vehicles, marking its first time outselling the American company over a full year.

The Tesla Model Y, which had been Australia’s best‑selling EV since 2023, was dethroned by the BYD brand for the top spot on the sales charts.

How BYD has grown since its founding in 1995

BYD is on course to exceed the battery‑electric vehicle sales, a milestone that reflects the rapid rise of Chinese EV manufacturers in the global market. Driven heavily by reliability and affordability, BYD’s ascent increases competitive pressure, especially on pricing and market share in key regions.

On Thursday, BYD announced that sales of its battery-powered cars increased by almost 28% last year to exceed 2.25 million.

Tesla is set to announce its total sales for 2025 later today. Last week, the company released analysts' estimates indicating that it sold approximately 1.65 million vehicles throughout the year. The U.S. firm has encountered a challenging year, experiencing a mixed reception for its new offerings, concerns regarding Elon Musk's political activities, and increasing competition from Chinese rivals.

Chinese companies like Geely, MG, and BYD, now the largest electric car manufacturer in the country, have challenged Western competitors by offering their vehicles at lower prices than established brands.

Despite tariffs on Chinese EVs imposed by many countries, the Shenzhen company has quickly expanded into Latin America, Southeast Asia, Australia, and parts of Europe.

Recent European crash-test evaluations have given top safety ratings to Chinese EVs, and many of them cost less than similar models made by other companies in other countries

In October, BYD announced the UK as its largest market outside China, with sales in Britain soaring 880% in the year ending September, fueled by high demand for the plug-in hybrid Seal U SUV.
