Congratulations from your UWI Alumni Family!
The Honorable Dickon Amiss Thomas Mitchell has been sworn in as prime minister of the tri-island state of Grenada, Carriacou, and Petite Martinique. Mitchell, 44, was sworn in as the ninth Prime Minister of Grenada by Governor-General Dame Cecile La Grenade during a ceremony at the Grenada Trade Center on 24 June 2022. He described the election victory as surreal and nothing short of a miracle. Mitchell, an attorney at law by profession, says the citizens of Grenada have shown that even when larger countries falter, Grenada’s democracy is strong, alive, and rests with the people.

Lost Vegas
Sin City — I feel saddened as I write this article. I have enjoyed visiting Las Vegas since I was a young child, as it was part of our annual family vacation. However, I am no longer a child, and I am frustrated by how the city has changed — and not for the better.

Sin City
The decision that Vegas is not worth the time or money
The city of Las Vegas has gone through many transformations over the years. Sin City graduated from a mafia playground where celebrities such as Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr., and Dean Martin provided legendary entertainment and status to Sin City.
Later the city morphed into a more family-friendly environment with casinos including recreational areas for kids to enjoy. But we are now entering Las Vegas' latest phase.
The newest version is a playground for the rich and famous.
Today, hotels and casinos provide luxury dining and entertainment for those who can afford it.
Sports franchises such as the Las Vegas Knights/Raiders have given the city an even bigger profile as a sporting mecca. Modernized venues like the Allegiance/T-Mobile Arenas now offer gourmet food instead of standard stadium fare, marking a new era for Vegas diehards.
Entertainers such as Adele, the Eagles, and others who have sought a residency are raking it in, while the average Joe can't even afford tickets for such amazing artists.
What does this mean for the working stiff?
It means we are out of luck. Luck is for those with the bucks [Moula]!
Staying in hotels along the Strip has changed significantly. Even if you manage to secure a reasonable room rate, guests are confronted with resort fees, parking fees, and exorbitant prices for often subpar and inedible food.
It is no wonder that the average person is in the food court eating Popeyes and McDonalds (still overpriced) rather than enjoying the restaurants within the hotels.
There was a time when I could eat for a weekend for 20-40 bucks, but now a mediocre breakfast is $80.00 for a party of two. Adding insult to injury, this 24-hour town now asks that I notify them to have my room cleaned.
I have been in expensive rooms without clean towels, unmade beds, and overflowing trash bins.
If you request maid service, you face resistance and questions. Everyone expects a tip, and the service is poor and worse if you don't tip. So, it would seem that Las Vegas has the winning hand.
I no longer see the benefits of booking a hotel. I would prefer to stay at an Airbnb and shop at a local grocery store rather than be overcharged. My last few trips have been quite disappointing, and I've decided that visiting Vegas is no longer worth my time or money.
Notice that I did not mention winning money because if you think that is going to happen, you are delusional.
My goodness, even robbers wear a mask, and Vegas is not hiding its greed. A trip to Las Vegas is now a donation to those who are already well-off.
If you venture into the wrong areas, you are met with aggressive homelessness, and who needs that?
I live near California Indian casinos but have always preferred Las Vegas. Now, I am reconsidering that decision.
Indian casinos offer good food and entertainment for a reasonable price and if you are a gambler, you can actually leave with something in your pocket other than lint. Indian casinos provide a budget-friendly alternative to the high costs of visiting Las Vegas.
I feel saddened as I write this article. I have enjoyed visiting Las Vegas since I was a young child, as it was part of our annual family vacation. However, I am no longer a child, and I am frustrated by how the city has changed — and not for the better.
I look for to my next holiday at the nearest Indian casino, I suggest you join me!

A safety concern was raised previously.
“One of the three aircraft, the ERJ operated by Nigeria’s XeJet Aviation, the Embraer ERJ-145LR registered as 5N-BZZ, previously documented as N846HK, had its airframe information verified using data from accident investigation authorities. At the time, the runway 18L surface was contaminated with water due to heavy rainfall. ”
The aircraft in question was confirmed by accident investigation authorities to have experienced a serious runway excursion during its landing at approximately 1:00 PM on Saturday, May 11, 2024, at the domestic terminal of Murtala Muhammed Airport in Lagos. The incident caused damage to the aircraft's nose landing gear and both main landing gears. The NSIB has released a preliminary report summarizing the sequence of events. “UPDATE: October 26, 2024: Air Sierra Leone Delays the Launch of Flight Bookings from Freetown to London Gatwick due to technical issues.”
Air Sierra Leone issued an apology to customers for the inconvenience caused. The airline emphasized its commitment to delivering excellent service, and its team is actively working to resolve the technical issues.
The airline had planned to open bookings for the new service on October 18, 2024, but cited technical issues as the reason for the delay.
The article will be updated as new information becomes available.
The new airline is to operate under a UK Air Operating Certificate (AOC) as it progresses towards obtaining its own Sierra Leonean AOC in the near future. This strategic move ensures that we meet international standards while expanding our global presence.
The airline will operate a fleet of three aircraft: two Boeing 737s with seating capacities of 189 and 149 passengers, and an Embraer aircraft with a capacity of 50 seats.
In May 2022, Xejet signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Sierra Leone government to operate Air Sierra Leone, the national carrier. Emmanuel Iza serves as Xejet's Founder and Chief Executive Officer. Hon. Kabineh M. Kallon signed the original MoU on behalf of the government.

Dr. Memunatu Pratt, Minister of Tourism and Cultural Affair
Effective Thursday 5th September 2019, the West African country, Sierra Leone, has through its Immigration Department and Ministry of Tourism and Cultural Affairs introduced a new "Visa On Arrivals Policy" which now allows visitors from different countries to travel to Sierra Leone where they can get their respective Visas on arrival at a minimum cost of US $28 for African countries and US $80 for other countries in the world. Sierra Leone Becomes "Visa On Arrival" Country.
Except for ECOWAS nationals who are already on Visa-free movement, the new Visa on Arrival policy was rolled-out for travelers from the following countries or block: United Kingdom, European Union, United States, Commonwealth countries, Gulf Cooperation Council member countries (UAE, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait and Oman), BRICS countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa), Iran, Cambodia, Vietnam, Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand, Turkey, Japan, South Korea, Norway, Israel, Bolivia, East Timor, Macau, Samoa, Tuvalu.
Sierra Leone's Chief Immigration Officer, Mr. Andrew Jaiah KaiKai said countries not listed are required to visit the nearest Sierra Leone Embassy or Mission abroad to secure visas before visiting Sierra Leone.
“All persons coming to Sierra Leone for the purpose other than tourism, visit or business needs to apply for a visa before undertaken such travel...We wish to reassure all potential visitors of a continuing hassle-free visa processing experience”
Speaking to journalists in the capital of Freetown, the Chief Immigration Officer maintained that the decision for the introduction of this new policy is part of government's commitment to promote tourism and attract foreign direct investment in Sierra Leone. A notice has already been put out to the public and correspondence sent to airline operators, Sierra Leone Embassies and Missions overseas, International Air Transport Association (IATA), International partners and other government bodies.
Sierra Leone's Chief Immigration Officer, Andrew Jaiah Kaikai
Mr. Kaikai assured Sierra Leoneans that the Visa on Arrival policy will not compromise the country's security, adding that his government together with the relevant stakeholders such as the Office of the National Security (ONS), International Police Organization (INTERPOL), and the Immigration Department will profile visitors to make sure that they do not have a questionable character before entering the country.
As potential visitors were struggling with our embassies abroad to receive a Visa to Sierra Leone, such bold step by the government to introduce this new policy will help the country to be very close to the rest of the world, said the Minister of Tourism and Cultural Affairs, Dr. Memunatu Pratt.
Dr. Pratt noted this is a step in the right direction, given that the country's tourism sector has been in crisis over the years. She added that the non-availability of Sierra Leonean foreign missions in most of the world has proved challenging for people who want to visit the country. Still, the introduction of the Visa on Arrival policy will allow visitors to get in and have a Visa right at the Freetown International Airport.
The Minister said they are again planning to take another giant step to meet with the Board of Airlines operating in the country and the Hotel Owners' Association to drop the prices for airline tickets and hotels which, she noted, are quite expensive and pose a challenge for tourists to visit Sierra Leone.

Outraged American Airlines Passengers Dropped Off At Wrong Destination, Stranded Without Passports
The recent video posted by one user (@italiankate) has made headlines, receiving over 8.1 million views. This popularity has been due to viewers’ concerns regarding a difficult traveler situation. The video documents the reactions of passengers on a flight from Puerto Rico to Miami. This flight was due to depart on Saturday, August 3 at around 5:30 p.m. Flight 2421 was supposed to be a breeze since the journey should have only been around two hours and 30 minutes.

American Airlines has encountered many difficulties in recent years. While some have been racial incidents or safety concerns, this airline seems to be struggling. Yet, they are not the only ones trying to get back on their feet. After the global IT outage which is still a pretty fresh development due to complications, fliers are very cautious about the aviation industry. However, concerning situations continue to happen nearly every week despite some improvements.
A recent TikTik video has exposed the next big airline incident. The situation is unfolding online and people are realizing the severity of the situation. An American Airlines flight has left passengers stranded without passports and there is much more to discover about the appalling incident. Here is what we know about the travel incident and the most important takeaways.
How The Passengers Were Stranded Without Passports
The recent video posted by one user (@italiankate) has made headlines, receiving over 8.1 million views. This popularity has been due to viewers’ concerns regarding a difficult traveler situation. The video documents the reactions of passengers on a flight from Puerto Rico to Miami. This flight was due to depart on Saturday, August 3 at around 5:30 p.m. Flight 2421 was supposed to be a breeze since the journey should have only been around two hours and 30 minutes. But, instead, the passengers ended up reaching their destination on Sunday afternoon after an unexpected diversion.
A North Carolina native named Dimas (@griptape_) divulges the whole situation in the video while other passengers in the background look extremely exhausted and concerned. Due to Hurricane Debby, which gained strength as it encountered Florida, the plane was reportedly circling for half an hour. This happened right before the passengers got a surprising announcement that the plane had to land in the Bahamas. The pilot even reportedly questioned over the intercom, “Who here has their passports and who doesn’t?” But despite the overwhelmingly uniform response that travelers did not have their passports with them, the domestic flight was rerouted to an international destination.
Passengers Left In Harsh Conditions
After sitting on the tarmac in the Bahamas for nearly two hours without much explanation, the passengers were allowed to deboard. This decision was seemingly due to the pilot not being allowed to do overtime. That was just the beginning of their issues. Once travelers deplaned around 8:30 p.m., they were stuck in an unfortunate predicament. Since they had not expected to be in an international destination stranded without their passports they were technically there illegally.
As a result, the passengers were told they could not leave the airport. The bigger issue was that they could not leave their terminal either. Being confined to a terminal due to being in a country illegally was surely not in their plans for the day. What followed this confinement was what made the situation much more grueling.
The passengers had to endure a lack of resources since they could not leave the terminal for food and water. There was also very little communication between the American Airlines staff and the passengers who were sitting ducks. After many hours, the American Airlines staff were still not providing updates. They even reportedly turned off their computer so that the inquiring passengers could not see them. The passengers just had to continue to believe that a plane with a new crew would arrive soon to take them to their destination.
The video was posted around seven hours after arriving in Nassau (NAS). At that point, passengers were using one restroom for around 100 people, surviving off Biscoff cookies, and had no blankets. They were even restricted from retrieving medication that was in their luggage on the plane due to red tape issues. It is reported that after a full 14 hours of being confined to their gate in the Bahamas, they arrived in Miami.
The Aftermath
This video gives viewers an insider’s look at the unique circumstances surrounding the passengers stranded without passports. It had some travelers curious about how to avoid the same fate. Some people commenting stated that they always brought their passports along on travels, even domestic journeys. With the ever-changing challenges and conditions of travel, perhaps this is a wise decision moving forward.
While many online spectators predicted hefty compensation for the passengers, unfortunately, American Airlines has not made that clear. Since the nightmarish situation was caused by weather conditions, there are seemingly no guarantees. A few people online suggested that passengers who were trapped at the Nassau airport should take more serious action. Things like filing a complaint with the FAA or a class action lawsuit were brought up, but it is unclear whether or not those things will happen.

When flights are canceled or delayed, you're legally entitled to:
Refunds
Alternate transportation
Compensation for additional expenses
Reimbursement for flight-related expenses
In the U.S., the Department of Transportation (DOT) requires airlines to compensate passengers for delays and cancellations.
The DOT's rules do not specify an amount but require airlines to provide meals, accommodations, and transportation to and from the airport.
Under European Union (EU) regulations, if your flight is canceled or significantly delayed, you may be entitled to compensation from the airline if the delay or cancellation was within the airline's control.
The first thing you should do is contact the airline to determine your options.
If your flight has been canceled, many airlines offer to either reschedule your flight later or provide a full refund for the ticket.
If your flight has been delayed, many airlines offer compensation or assistance, such as meals or hotel accommodations, depending on the length of the delay and the circumstances.
If you experienced a significant delay or other inconvenience, you may be able to receive additional compensation to cover any additional expenses you incurred as a result.
If you cannot find a satisfactory resolution, you can file a complaint with the Department of Transportation.

Online Passport Renewal Is Now Available For Some Applicants
You may no longer need to go to the post office to renew your passport. The State Department is running a trial for online passport renewals and plans to fully open the system for online renewals in the coming months.
Here's how it works
June 12, 2024
You may no longer need to go to the post office to renew your passport.
The State Department is running a trial for online passport renewals and plans to fully open the system for online renewals in the coming months.
Online renewals will be available to a limited number of applicants each day for now, and those applications will only be accepted during Eastern time zone midday hours.
“We plan to continue to limit the number of applications accepted each day so we can monitor the system’s performance in real-time,” the State Department said. “This beta release during which we are limiting the daily applications is an important and standard part of the software development process.”
A Virginian shows the Female gender marker on their current US passport, prior to beginning the process of filling out a passport application with an X gender marker on April 11, 2022.
To qualify for online passport renewals, applicants must:
Have an existing U.S. passport that was issued no more than 15 years prior to the new application date. It must still be in the applicant’s possession, and not previously reported lost or stolen.
Not be changing their name, gender, date of birth or place of birth for the new passport.
Be applying for a regular tourist passport.
Live in a U.S. state or territory.
Be able to pay the renewal fee using a credit or debit card online.
Be able to upload a digital photo.
The State Department will not offer expediting for online passport renewals during the system trial period, so it requires applicants to certify that they have no international travel plans for at least eight weeks from the application date.
The fee for online passport renewal is the same as a renewal by mail – $130. The State Department advises applicants that their existing passport will be canceled as their renewal application is processed. New passports will still be delivered by mail after the application is approved.

Expats Tell What It’s Really Like to Live in Dubai

It’s one expensive city
By Leah Leinkram | Originally published on tettybetty
Dubai is a cosmopolitan like no other. It attracts expats from all over the world, coming together in this bustling city, with a foreign population of over 85%. Whilst there are a lot of residents that come from Western countries, this business hub of the Middle East retains a lot of its traditional Islamic practices and traditions, which often translate into rules and laws that all residents must abide by.
Some of these may be seemingly outrageous, like potential jail time for public displays of affection, but all laws aside, this city has all the glitz and glamor that seem only to exist in movies and magazines. From police officers driving around in Ferraris to ATMs dispensing gold, Dubai offers a high-rolling lifestyle that is parallel to none. It has one of the youngest average age populations, making it an exciting, young, and fun city. Here is what it is really like to live in Dubai, according to expats.
It’s one expensive city
It may be seemingly so obvious to some, but the cost of living in Dubai is pretty unimaginable. Once you add up how much rent, bills and groceries are, it can amount to a fairly large sum.
When people hear of the salaries being offered in Dubai, they are often dazzled by the high numbers. But don’t be fooled – these salaries may just be enough to cover a decent lifestyle. Some people envision life in Dubai as sipping martinis and driving a sports car, but that is pretty much false.
There is no income tax
Whilst it is very easy to spend a lot of money and go wild in Dubai, there is one money-saving perk that sets this place aside from everywhere else.
There is no income tax in Dubai, meaning that your very attractive salary will remain very attractive once it has been paid to you and enters your bank account. This is unlike other countries that sometimes make it feel as though most of your earnings are going towards taxes.
Celebrities are not uncommon
Dubai is a city that many celebrities have also decided to call their home, or at least for some, their home away from home. For example, Lindsay Lohan purchased a piece of land right off the coast of Dubai, on The World Islands.
She plans on redeveloping the land and calling it ‘Lohan Island.’ Another celebrity couple who has purchased property in Dubai is Victoria and David Beckham, who own a home in the iconic Burj Khalifa and a villa in Palm Jumeirah.
Abide by the rules
This one is an actual must. If you want to avoid trouble and stay safe in Dubai, it is of vital importance to always adhere to the rules and laws. These may seem a little strange and unfamiliar, like any expression of public affection.
Yet, even the smallest law that is broken can have consequences that are as dramatic as being arrested, or even, in some extreme cases, deported. Therefore, if you wish to stay in Dubai, avoid situations like photographing strangers and public intoxication.
There are a lot of strange laws
The laws in Dubai are sometimes pretty obscure, despite the city being multicultural and, for the most part, an open-minded environment.
However, you could face jail time for gossiping, swearing online and in real life, fundraising for a charity without a special license, and even carrying around food containing poppy seeds! Even intimacy before marriage is considered against the law, and doing so could mean a minimum of one year spent in jail.
Weekends are… when?!
Whilst in most places we know, the weekend occurs over Saturday and Sunday, in the United Arab Emirates, this is not the case. In Dubai, work begins on a Sunday, with the weekend taking place on Friday and Saturday.
The reason for this is that Friday is considered to be a holy day in Islam, therefore, people should not be working on that day. Although it seems a bit confusing in the beginning, expats quickly learn to say ‘TGIT,’ Thank God It’s Thursday.
The police drive cool cars
If you ever do find yourself being caught eating a poppy seed bagel, and the next minute you are in the back of a police car in Dubai being whisked away to pay for your heinous crime, be sure to take a moment of this stressful situation to check out the vehicle you are in.
Seeing a police emblem on a brand-new luxury car, like a Ferrari, Lamborghini, Mercedes, or Bugatti, is not an uncommon sight in this city.
It is super safe
Because of all these strict laws and rules that are enforced in Dubai, there is an extremely low crime rate in the city. Dubai is ranked as one of the safest cities in the entire world.
Not only is there police patrol giving the citizens a full sense of security 24/7, but the public transport system is closely monitored and safe for use no matter the time. That same cannot be said for many Western cities!
Make friends from all over the world!
Dubai is known to be an extremely multicultural city. More than 85% of the population in Dubai consists of expats – people who have made the move to this beautiful city from all four corners of the globe.
It is really important to be open-minded in this city, and not have any preconceived prejudices or biased opinions on other cultures and nationalities. Most circles of friends will likely have people from extraordinarily diverse backgrounds, so be respectful and open to different people.
A youthful city
What probably adds to the hustle and bustle of Dubai is the young age demographic that makes up this city. Over half of the population in Dubai is aged between 25 to 34, making it an extraordinarily youthful city.
This also means that many of the attractions and activities in Dubai are geared towards targeting that age group. It is surprising for some people to discover that only 15% of the population in Dubai is over 45.
Tuesday nights are for the ladies
We apologize boys, but this piece of information from the expats is purely for the ladies! Whilst Dubai does have an active nightlife, with bars and clubs being open and with overflowing crowds almost every night of the week, the best night for a girl’s night is a Tuesday.
Nearly every club and bar in Dubai has a ladies' night offer on a Tuesday, which usually includes drinks on the house and discounted food.
Brush up on your Arabic
Most expats moving to Dubai will say that they never find themselves in a situation that requires them to be fluent in Arabic. Most people in the city speak passable English, and it is pretty rare to need to speak the Arabic language.
Nonetheless, most people living there know at least a little bit of Arabic. This comes in handy when people say words like ‘Yalla,’ they know that it is time to hurry along and stop dawdling.
Prepare for change
Dubai is known for being a city that is constantly evolving. From the wild attractions like The Dubai Fountain and Palm Islands to skyscrapers like Burj Khalifa, Dubai has an almost futuristic feel to it.
So, it is not uncommon to see huge cranes every corner you turn, all promising that they are building the ‘largest something’ the world has ever seen. While this can be cool to watch develop, it can also be a little frustrating, with one street being there one day and the next day, gone.
Crane capital of the world
At the peak of the property development boom, the city skyline of Dubai seemed to consist of crane after crane.
There are even some sources who claim that Dubai, at a point, was home to 25% of the cranes in the world, however, this may just be an urban legend – other sources say that they had about 2% or 3% of the cranes. Nonetheless, the amount of cranes in this city is still absurd, and the city does not stop developing.
Check out the sights
A lot of expats, in their eagerness to integrate into Dubai society, forget that the city is home to some of the world’s greatest landmarks and forget to act as though they are tourists for a bit and check them out.
The Burj Khalifa in Dubai is the tallest building in the world and dramatizes the Dubai city skyline. It is 828 meters tall, with tourists given access up to the 125th floor.
Lap up the luxury
Even though most expats will say that the luxuries that Dubai has to offer are way beyond their budget, it is pretty cool to go check out these beautiful and extravagant sights the city has.
Dubai is the only city in the entire world that can claim to have a 7-star hotel – the Burj al Arab. This hotel is considered to be more luxurious than any other hotel in the world, with the cheapest room costing around 1000 euros per night.
No one from back home will understand
Expats living in Dubai often say that none of their friends and relatives back home will ever fully comprehend what it means to live in a city like Dubai, no matter how much they try to explain their lifestyle to them.
It is not uncommon for residents to be asked questions like if they take a camel to work, or whether they are a millionaire. Dubai is one of those cities that unless you have lived there, it is hard to explain.
It’s super hot
It is no hidden secret that Dubai has an extremely hot climate. Yet, most people probably do not understand just how hot it is until they move there. This is no Florida heat… this is the real deal. Summer temperatures can reach the high 40s (degrees Celsius), making the city feel like a burning hot oven.
Nonetheless, this does not impede the quality of life in Dubai. There is air conditioning everywhere in the city, from buildings to bus stops, so rest assured – AC is never far.
It rarely rains
If you are someone who enjoys sitting at home, snuggling up with a hot drink and a movie on a rainy day, then Dubai is not the city you should consider living in.
On the other hand, if you find that rain often impedes on your plans to be out and about, then Dubai is calling your name! The city only gets about 3.7 inches of rainfall annually, on average – that is a seriously small amount of rain.
Weekends are for brunching
People living in Dubai love to brunch. Fridays can often involve a brunch marathon, running from one brunch with colleagues to another with friends, to a third with family.
Newly arrived expats are often surprised by how important brunch is considered as a part of the city’s lifestyle. On the menu is often more than just food, albeit, the food is generally quite extravagant and festive. It also usually involves drinks and entertainment, so prepare your wallets, stomachs, and your livers.
There is always traffic
One thing Dubai residents will admit their city falls short of is their public transport. It can be surprising for expats arriving from Europe, which has a great public transport system, to discover how much traffic there is in Dubai as a result of the lack of public transport options.
There are only two lines on the Dubai Metro, which means that most places in the city do not have access to it, as well as bus routes, take so long, that it is more worthwhile to catch a cab.
Get ready for the hustle
A common conversation in Dubai amongst the residents is about how life is so busy. This city seems to never stop, and expats will say that they often hear the word ‘hustle’ being thrown around when chatting with friends.
People appear to have a never-ending list of tasks they need to have completed for work, errands, social events, and countless stresses. It seems as though no one is safe from the Dubai hustle, and you need to be ready to live life at the fastest pace.
A shopping trip that champions all previous shopping trips
Another record that has been broken in Dubai is the shopping center, the Dubai Mall, being the largest shopping center in the world.
The mall has over 1200 stores, which are spread out over 4 levels, with a total retail area space of over 500,000 square meters, which comes to about 5,400,000 sq ft. Just imagine trying to get from one side of the mall to the other – you would probably run out of breath at about halfway.
Skiing in a desert
For people wanting to move to Dubai, but are snow sports junkies and are concerned that this Emirate may not accommodate for this, being located right in the center of the Arabian desert, rest assured – the Dubaians have thought of everything.
Despite there being not a mountain in sight, there is still an option for those wanting to ski… inside a shopping mall. The Mall of the Emirates has an indoor ski resort, that has an indoor ski area of over 22,500 meters.
Islam is the official religion
Although there are a lot of countries in which Islam is the dominant religion and therefore there are strict laws enforced on all people that are in line with the religion, Dubai has a more relaxed approach towards this.
However, some cultural aspects have been influenced by Islam that everyone must adhere to. This includes dressing modestly in public, and PDA being frowned upon, with the possibility of being fined and even deported.
A flower fanatic’s paradise
Any flower enthusiasts even thinking of moving to Dubai would be excited to find out about this cool attraction that the city has to offer. The Miracle Gardens is home to over 250 million plants and 50 million flowers.
These gardens are huge – they cover an area of about 780,000 square feet or 72,000 square meters. We can just imagine the beautiful scents that these gardens give off. Taking a walk through them must feel like paradise.
ATMs dispense real gold bars
Most countries only have ATMs that dispense cash, but here in Dubai, if you want to withdraw some gold bars, you can do so. There are ATMs in the city that dispense real gold bars.
Whilst we can not imagine trying to pay for groceries with a bar of gold, it is pretty cool that this is something that exists in Dubai. However, most expats probably use ATMs to take out Dirhams, the local currency in Dubai.
There is gold everywhere
Not only do the ATMs dispense real gold bars, but Dubai happens to have over 25% of the physical gold in the world passing through its city. There is even the popular attraction of the Gold Souk, which is a traditional market that houses over 380 retailers, all selling gold.
The love of gold in Dubai is so rampant that they hold the world record for making the longest gold chain, measuring about 5,522 meters, or 18,116 ft.
The weight loss incentive of dreams
The obsession with gold extends even to incentives laid out by the government in Dubai. For the ultimate weight loss incentive, Dubai is the place to live. To motivate their population to lead an active and healthy lifestyle, the government awards each family 2 grams of gold for every kilogram lost.
These days, they dole out nearly a million dollars in rewards every year. If only that happened in other countries – the world would be a much healthier place!
Camel racing is the new football
Whilst the United States has their football and Canada has their hockey, Dubai has camel racing, which is an extremely popular sport in the city. In the past, children were made to race the camels given their size.
These days, however, this is highly illegal and the world has put a stop to this. Nonetheless, they came up with an ingenious solution: they built child-size robots to race the camels. Now, they can continue to enjoy the sport without running into any humanitarian issues!
Addresses are a recent thing
At the fast pace that Dubai has been developing, a standard address system was never established.
In the past, ex-pats describe the confusing way that they would get around, by drawing up a map on a piece of paper, or very specific instructions on locations, like ‘after the mosque, the third door on the right.’ Only in 2015 did Dubai start to assign a unique 10-digit code, called Makani numbers, to identify the buildings.
The desert is right around the corner
Being in such a bustling, advanced, and modern city, it is often easy to forget just how close the Arabian desert is to Dubai. Within about twenty minutes, one can travel from the center of the city into the desert.
It is such an easy escape from the high pressures that come along with a city lifestyle, that expats recommend getting away once in a while. There are so many experiences to be had in the desert – from camel riding to 4WDing.
3-hour lunch breaks
The average working week in Dubai is generally between 40 to 48 hours. It is not unheard of for companies in Dubai to give their employees a three-hour break for lunch.
So, if you are all about that afternoon siesta lifestyle, moving to Dubai would not sound like such a bad idea. After all, who knows what sort of fun activities you could get up to with a three-hour break – the options seem to be endless.
Not your average household pets
Most people living in more Westernized countries would get a dog or a cat, or even perhaps a bird, as a choice of animal for a pet. In Dubai, on the other hand, residents turn to more exotic animals.
The most favored are lions and cheetahs, but the more exotic your pet is, the higher your social status. Thankfully, the government is phasing out this practice and hopefully more traditional household pets will become popular in Dubai.
It is never boring
With everything being said, expats will say though that there is never a dull day in Dubai. From the bustling hustle of the city to the multiculturalism creating an environment that allows you to make friends from all over the world, Dubai is a city that seems to invite a daily adventure!
Although it is sometimes overwhelming, and sometimes it is just so chaotic, most of the time it is simply so fun, with most residents having the crazy and cool tales to tell.
It’s extremely accessible
It is interesting to know that the Dubai International Airport is the world’s busiest airport for international passenger traffic, meaning that Dubai itself is an extremely accessible place.
There are the highest average amount of passengers per flight coming through this airport, so it is not a strange suggestion for ex-pats to make to their friends back home to consider stopping off in Dubai on their travels, as it can very easily be made a part of a trip.
Join a beach club
Expats advise that for a cool way to get into the social life in Dubai would be to join a private beach club. Beach clubs are pretty cool to socialize with friends that are coming to town, or to make new friends in Dubai itself.
Some beach clubs offer live performances, whilst others offer perks like great deals on drinks and food. We can think of no better place to spend the weekend!
Dine out
Dubai is full of different restaurants – so many that you can spend a year dining out at a different restaurant every single night.
Notable celebrity chefs, from Jamie Oliver to Gary Rhodes to Gordon Ramsay, have all opened up restaurants in Dubai, so be sure to check out these establishments and taste the cuisines concocted by these notorious chefs. Eating out is a part of the lifestyle in Dubai, so you may as well have an experience whilst doing so.
Never have a check bounce
It is not uncommon in Dubai for people to pay for large purchases with forward-dated cheques, from cars, to even rent. This is because it is fairly difficult for expats, as well as locals, to obtain a loan here.
However, whilst in other countries bouncing a cheque is merely annoying, in Dubai, it is considered to be quite a hefty crime. The punishments include being arrested and jailed, and you can even be forced to stay in Dubai until you pay your debt.
Don’t dance in public
Dancing in public may seem to be no big deal back home, but in Dubai, shimmying with your friends down the street after a few drinks on a night out is considered to be a form of indecency. People can dangerously translate this as provocative, which for women in the UAE can be fairly dangerous.
It is perfectly fine to dance around in the privacy of your own home, or you are also allowed to dance when going to an official club, but anywhere else is a big no-no.
There is a dress code
There is a level of conservative dress code that most Emiratis abide by, and there is the general expectation that both visitors and expats abide by these dress codes too.
For example, when going to the mall or even just for a stroll down the street, make sure that your clothes are not too short, are not too revealing, and are not see-through. In some shopping centers, there are even signs warning that immodestly dressed women will be asked to leave.
There are rules about sunbathing
In regards to the dress code when it comes to sunbathing, it is acceptable to wear bathing suits, but keep in mind that the more ‘offensive’ body parts should be covered. It is also considered indecent to sunbathe topless, seeing as really any form of nudity is deemed unacceptable in Dubai.
In addition, once you leave the designated swimming area, like a pool or beach, you have to cover right back up – there is no walking home in your bikini.
Drive carefully
You may get excited by the sports cars speeding and weaving through the streets of Dubai, but do not be fooled by the attitude of these drivers. It can almost seem as though there are no road rules or laws regarding driving here, and that is seriously not the case.
Even though most people here seem to disregard these rules, the police are starting to crack down, so you don’t want to get into any bad habits over here.
Road rage is not tolerated
It is so frustrating when we get cut off by some arrogant driver on the road, the need to demonstrate an offensive gesture in their direction, or yell out a few choice vulgar words can be pretty tempting.
However, when in Dubai, you should probably refrain from doing so, as the person on the receiving end is completely entitled to call the police on you and the punishment can range from being fined to imprisonment.
Respect the religion
Seeing as the main religion in Dubai is Islam, there is no tolerance for any disrespect shown towards the religion. Although expats are completely entitled to practice their own beliefs, they must do so without demonstrating any intolerance towards Islam.
For example, it is not uncommon for Muslims to pray in a public area, so when you encounter this, do not openly stare and do not disturb them – it will not be tolerated, and could result in a fine or jail time.

Australians wanting to travel overseas without a visa now have a greater choice of destinations than ever before, according to the latest Henley Passport Index.
Using data from the International Air Transport Authority (IATA), London-based investment migration consultancy firm Henley & Partners compared the visa-free access of 199 nations' passports to 227 locations around the world and ranked them based on travel freedom.
It found that Australian passport holders can travel to 189 of those destinations, either without needing a visa at all or being able to obtain a visa, visitor's permit, or electronic travel authority (ETA) upon arrival.
Joining Japan and Singapore amongst the strongest passports, were European nations France, Germany, Italy, and Spain, with their respective passports gaining visa-free access to 194 destinations.
The Finnish, South Korean, and Swedish passports came a close second with visa-free access to 193 locations, while Australia was sixth, alongside New Zealand, Czechia, and Poland.

Countries Australians can travel to without a visa
Fifty European destinations, including Germany, France, Ireland, the Netherlands, Sweden, and the United Kingdom, offer Australian tourists entry without a visa.
Australians looking to stay closer to home can travel visa-free to around a dozen places in Oceania, like the Cook Islands, Fiji, and New Zealand, and 14 in Asia including Hong Kong, Malaysia, and the Philippines.
More than 20 destinations in both the Americas and the Caribbean, such as Argentina, Mexico, Barbados, and Jamaica, don't require Australians to have a visa to enter.
For Australians keen to head to Africa, 17 locations including Botswana, Morocco, and Rwanda offer visa-free entry, as do five in the Middle East, including Qatar and Oman.
Bangladesh, Indonesia, Malawi, Saudi Arabia, and Türkiye are among the more than 40 places around the world where Australians can get a visa or visitor's permit on arrival, while ETAs are available upon entry to eight destinations including the United States, Canada, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka.
Some countries on the visa-free list are ones the Australian government advises people not to travel to right now, including Iran, Lebanon, and Ukraine.
Israel and the Palestinian Territories are among the places Australians are urged to reconsider their need to travel to.
Countries Australians need a visa for
There are 37 destinations where Australian passport holders either must obtain a visa before departure or get pre-approval from the government for a visa upon arrival.
Over half are in Africa, including Ghana, South Sudan, and Uganda.
While Papua New Guinea and Nauru may be considered our neighbors, Australians will need a visa before they travel to either of them.
Travelling overseas? Here's what the embassy will and won't do to help if you get in trouble
Cuba is now the only Caribbean nation on the list that requires Australian tourists to have visas, while Asia has seven including Afghanistan, China, and North Korea.
Australians planning a European holiday that takes in Azerbaijan or Russia will also need a visa before they head off, as will those traveling to Syria or Yemen in the Middle East, or Brazil or Chile in the Americas.
The most popular international travel destinations for Australians
New Zealand is the most popular international travel destination for Australian residents, according to the latest data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics.
Indonesia and the United States are the second and third most visited places, with the UK, India, Thailand, Fiji, Singapore, Japan, and Vietnam rounding out the top 10.
India and Vietnam are the only nations on that list that require Australian passport holders to secure a visa before they arrive.

The government's immigration services department said the "maiden visa-free arrivals" landed in Nairobi from Ethiopia's capital Addis Ababa and more were expected to touch down in the coming days.
Kenya said Friday it had welcomed the first batch of foreign tourists who arrived under a simplified entry system it hopes will encourage more visitors.

Immigration and Citizen Services Principal Secretary Julius Bitok said visa requirements would be waived for all travelers to Kenya regardless of nationality.
Under the new system, travelers apply online for an electronic travel authorization (ETA)and pay a $30 "processing" fee.
"Right now... all countries around the world including Africa, Asia, America, Australia, and all over the world, can come in visa-free," he said at the scheme launch at Nairobi's Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.
Last year President William Ruto announced that Kenya would become a "visa-free country" and existing requirements would be waived come January.
Even so, as recently as last Tuesday the Kenyan Civil Aviation Authority warned the new ETA system was "in the process of development and implementation."
The number of tourist arrivals in 2022 rose to 1.54 million, still below pre-pandemic levels, according to tourism ministry figures.
Kenya Tourism Board chair Francis Gichaba voiced hope in November that the figure could top two million in the latest financial year, surpassing the 2019 figure of 1.9 million.

Two Transportation Security Administration agents are facing charges for allegedly stealing from passengers' luggage
They're supposed to be checking your bags for any forbidden objects, but two TSA agents have been accused of taking some passengers' most prized objects, too.
The two agents in question — Josue Gonzalez and Labarrius Williams — were allegedly caught in the act on camera, with the Miami-Dade State Attorney's Office releasing surveillance footage of the crimes.
The video clips show the agents monitoring passengers' luggage at the Miami International Airport security checkpoint on June 29. Then they seemingly decide on some to unzip and pocket their findings straight from the conveyor belt.
Gonzalez, Williams, and a third agent, Elizabeth Fuster, were arrested on July 6 for the alleged thefts, though charges against Fuster have since been dropped.
Arrest records obtained by Scripps News alleged the trio were observed on several instances conspiring together to distract passengers as they were being screened to steal monies from their belongings.’
The arrest affidavit also said a detective researched theft reports from the checkpoint and found a recent one had been filed, pushing authorities to review surveillance video. This footage captured Williams and Gonzalez removing at least $600 from a passenger's wallet while they were in the screening process, the report said.
The suspects were charged with organized scheme to defraud.
Gonzales's attorney told CBS News his client agreed to a deferred prosecution program. If he completes the program, his case will be dismissed.
Miami-Dade Clerk of Courts records show a trial date is set for Williams next month.

Covid-19
Delta variant
You will only be allowed entry if you are a British or Irish National or have residence rights in the UK.
British Government today announced that on Monday 19th July at 4 AM, Sierra Leone will be joining a long list of countries with a very high prevalence of Covid infections from which travelers are banned from entering England.
Meaning that if you are entering England from Sierra Leone, you will only be allowed entry if you are a British or Irish National or you have residence rights in the UK.
In which case, before you travel to England, you must take a COVID-19 test; book a quarantine hotel package including 2 COVID-19 tests, and complete a passenger locator form.
Your Covid test result should be provided as a printed document or an email or text message you can show on your phone.
If you do not present proof of a negative Covid test, you may not be able to board your flight to England from Freetown. And arriving in England without proof of a negative test, you may be fined £500.
You must provide the original test result notification. It must include the following information:
your name, which should match the name on your travel documents
your date of birth or age
the result of the test
the date the test sample was collected or received by the test provider
the name of the test provider and their contact details
confirmation of the device used for the test, or that the test was a PCR test
If the test result does not include the information, you may not be able to board your flight. And if you arrive in England without a test result including the above information, you might have to pay a £500 fine.
If your test result is positive, you must not travel. You must follow local rules and guidelines laid down by the government of Sierra Leone for positive coronavirus cases. If the result is inconclusive, you must take another test.
British nationals who need consular assistance should contact the British High Commission in Freetown.
Children aged ten and under do not need to take a test. If you are an adult, you do not need to take a test if you are traveling to the UK for urgent medical treatment or accompanying someone traveling for urgent medical treatment. And that it is not reasonably practical to obtain a negative COVID-19 test in the three days before departure; or have a medical condition which means you cannot take a test. You must present a note from a medical practitioner at check-in and to Border Force staff on arrival in England.
Providing false or deliberately misleading information when filling out your passenger locator form before traveling to England is an offense punishable by imprisonment.
You could be fined up to £10,000 or imprisoned for up to 10 years or; both. Or if you do not provide accurate details about the countries you visited the ten days before you arrived in the UK.
Before you travel to England, you must book a managed quarantine hotel where you will quarantine- The quarantine package must include a quarantined hotel, food and drink, quarantine transfers, and travel test package COVID-19 on day2 and day8 of quarantine.
You will need to book, and pay for, a Quarantine Package before you complete your passenger locator form and board your return journey to the UK. You will only be able to book this within the two weeks before arriving in the UK.
If you break the quarantine rules, you may face a penalty of up to £10,000.
The decision by the British government to downgrade Sierra Leone from its amber list to red list was expected, after over one thousand (1000) cases of Covid were recorded in just four weeks in June.
Although the number of people that have died remains relatively low at 102, there are fears this figure may be much higher.
Two weeks ago, the government of Sierra Leone announced new Covid restrictions across the country, including an 11 PM to 5 AM curfew and the closure of all places of worship – except for funerals.
The British government says it will keep its list under constant review. Meanwhile, it “advises against all but essential travel to Sierra Leone based on the current assessment of COVID-19 risks.”

Abidjan, Bamako, Banjul, Bissau, Conakry, Freetown, Nouakchott, and Praia are available over Dakar on a two-way basis, with connections within about two hours in both directions. London – Freetown, for example, is a market of ~36,000 passengers, with timings as follows:
Freetown – Dakar: 1945 – 2230; Dakar – London: 0015 – 0625
London – Dakar: 0750 – 1405; Dakar – Freetown: 1600 – 1845

Air Senegal’s growth continues. In December, it added Dakar to Lagos via Accra; Abuja via Niamey; Casablanca; and Barcelona via Marseille. Freetown via Banjul is coming in June. The carrier is focusing significantly on hub-and-spoke, in contrast to the previous point-to-point Senegal Airlines. A highly coordinated hub is an obvious strategy for Air Senegal, partly given its geographic position.
Air Senegal has announced both Geneva and London, its fourth and fifth destinations in Europe. The carrier is to lease two 165-seat A321s – 149 economy seats, 16 lie-flat business – for these routes, and also for Abidjan, Casablanca, and Conakry.
Shown here are its West Africa – North Africa / Europe – West Africa connections, all well coordinated for connectivity over Dakar. Other African cities, such as Accra and Lagos, are timed to connect with other cities in West Africa (i.e., most of those that Europe connects with) rather than to Europe. Source: OAG Mapper.
Green = already served or announced. Blue = unserved. Geneva and London will be served non-stop. Marseille and Barcelona are currently linked in a triangle. Perhaps the A220-300 will be used to serve some thinner destinations, such as Toulouse? Source: OAG Traffic Analyser.
Geneva has ~69,000 passengers; London ~108,000
Geneva is a market of ~69,000 (Dakar point-to-point and demand to connecting destinations), and it will be partly driven by demand from the United Nations. It’ll probably also attract some of Lyon’s ~65,000 passengers, at least non-stop to Dakar, given the two cities are only 93 miles apart. London is a market of ~108,000 (excluding non-stop traffic to Banjul). It is reported that Stansted was chosen due to no early morning slots at Gatwick, with Air Senegal’s timings (or very similar) crucial for connectivity over Dakar.
Up to eight connecting destinations so far over Dakar
Its timings are, of course, based on maximizing connectivity to/from West Africa. Although it does vary a little based on day, Abidjan, Bamako, Banjul, Bissau, Conakry, Freetown, Nouakchott, and Praia are available over Dakar on a two-way basis, with connections within about two hours in both directions. London – Freetown, for example, is a market of ~36,000 passengers, with timings as follows:

Milan, Madrid, and Rome next?
Air Senegal’s European routes each had 60,000+ passengers before starting. Barcelona, Geneva, and Marseille also had local Dakar traffic averaging 47% of their total. Presumably, Marseille (~64,000) and Barcelona (~75,000) – each a good-sized market – will one day benefit from being de-tagged and served non-stop by A321s rather than on a triangle basis by the A330-900.
The figure, (Top 10 European markets for Air Senegal), shows the estimated two-way demand for Dakar and Air Senegal’s eight connecting destinations in the year to November 2019. For fairness, these numbers exclude any non-stop passengers as they’d be less likely to switch. Excluding short-term demand impacts from the coronavirus, Milan (76,000), Madrid (63,000), and Rome (58,000) seem good contenders for Air Senegal’s future European expansion. As is Lyon itself (65,000), but that’s now less certain given Geneva.
Milan stands out. Its ~76,000 is based on ~41,000 indirect Dakar traffic. Air Italy currently operates Milan Malpensa – Dakar four-weekly by the A330-200. However, the carrier is to cease operating. Therefore, it is fair to add its ~78,000 non-stop passengers, meaning Milan is a potential market of ~154,000.

Idris Elba passionately appeals for young Sierra Leoneans to exercise 'None Violence' during the general election for president and parliament that will take place on Saturday, June 24, 2023.
Idris Elba has called for a peaceful general election in Sierra Leone, which will take place on Saturday, June 24, 2023.
"This election, please let it be peaceful," he said in a message in Pidgin English - 'other African nations and the world will be watching us.' On the same day, the Commonwealth Observer Group in Sierra Leone, led by former Nigerian Vice-President Professor Yemi Osinbajo, called for peaceful elections to reflect; the will of the people.
Elba reminded young Sierra Leoneans that they have the 'power' in this vote and that if the country is destroyed due to violence, it will be down to us Sierra Leoneans to have to build it back up again.
The votes on Saturday will be the country's sixth presidential vote since a military takeover in 1992. It will see the incumbent, President Julius Madaa Bio of the Sierra Leone People's Party (SLPP), go up against Dr. Samura Kamara of the All People's Congress (APC) _the main opposition party.
There have been arrests of critical opposition voices in the run-up to the general election.

The Intrepid Tourist
The Dominican Republic is a beautiful Caribbean nation. Located on the eastern part of the island dubbed by Spanish explorers as Hispaniola or Little Spain, it occupies just over 48,000 sq. Km.
Originally inhabited by Arawak speaking peoples, the country today is a mix of European and African influences.
Blessed with natural resources and picturesque beaches, little wonder it is a popular tourist spot. On arrival, I was taken in by the fierce tropical heat and the natural warmth of its people. We were shepherded around by our self-titled guide Black Mama.
The Dominican Republic! It's known for its beaches, resorts, and golf.
San Domingo shows off its colonial past with decadent buildings and colorful streets. The influence of the Roman Catholic Church is all pervasive with ornate cathedrals and basilicas dot the landscape.
Baseball is the central sports passion, many provinces have stadia where fierce rivalries are played out. It is indeed, the dream of many to be the next Sammy Sosa. Many MLB teams scour the land looking for the next Phenom, for many it could be the golden ticket out of poverty. We visited a bustling local market replete with exotic foods, fish, fruit and vegetables.
After sampling sugar cane flavored liqueur it was time to visit a cigar factory. Dominican cigars match their Cuban rivals in quality. And they are reasonably priced for every budget.
When I travel I patronize local arts and crafts tradespeople. I like the give and take of bartering and the hunt for an authentic reminder of my island sojourn. I tend to avoid tees and hats made in China…
JUAN DOLIO: The area southeast of the Dominican Republic a place that combines the relaxation of its exotic beaches and the many sports you can practice on it.
Economically and socially the country is not as affluent as its neighbors Curacao and Aruba. Despite lavish resorts and country clubs, it is hard to ignore the disparity between rich and poor. Indeed, the irony was not lost on me that I probably spent more in a day than most earn monthly. Our hearts were broken as we visited a local orphanage.
The Dominican Republic is a beautiful country steeped in a rich history and a unique culture. I look forward to returning one day in the hope of discovering new horizons.
