Anti-Immigrant Violence Erupts in South Africa

Deadly clashes, looted homes, and mass panic force foreign nationals to flee as tensions spiral out of control.

May 4, 2026: South Africa: A wave of anti-immigrant marches and protests has swept through areas around Johannesburg and Pretoria, escalating into the looting of shops and targeted attacks on homes belonging to foreign nationals.

Reports confirm that at least two Nigerians have lost their lives in separate incidents, involving both confrontations with local security personnel and violent clashes tied to the unrest.

Economic despair ignites a wave of unrest, turning neighbors into targets. Video containing disturbing and sexually explicit content has been blocked.

Amid growing fears for their safety, more than 130 Nigerians have applied for voluntary repatriation. Across affected communities, anxiety is widespread, with many choosing to shut down their businesses rather than risk exposure to violence.

Nigeria’s government has voiced serious concern. The foreign minister has urged South African authorities to ensure the protection of Nigerian citizens and their livelihoods, while also initiating discussions to facilitate their return.

These outbreaks of violence appear rooted in deeper economic tensions—rising unemployment, widespread frustration, and a persistent belief that foreign nationals are competing for scarce jobs and opportunities. In this climate, migrants have increasingly become scapegoats.
