When Borders Turn Against Sierra Leoneans

Mass clearance operations in Conakry send hundreds across the border in a wave of forced returns.

Hundreds of Sierra Leoneans have been deported from Guinea in the latest fallout between citizens and Guinean authorities. Deportees claim they were rounded up from their homes and their possessions were taken away from them before being dropped off at the Pamlap border.

In a press release dated March 24, 2026, the Ministry of Information and Civic Education announced that the recent development resulted from a clearance operation carried out by authorities in Conakry, specifically within the Boulbinet port area, on March 23.

The exercise is part of the Guinean government’s broader initiative to dismantle informal settlements and identify undocumented foreign nationals.

The Government of Sierra Leone has confirmed that 942 Sierra Leoneans have so far been received at the Kambia border as a result of these ongoing operations by Guinean authorities.
