Wings of Tomorrow: Rwanda Unveils Continent's First Electric eVTOL Spectacle!

Rwanda: President Kagame Witnesses Pilotless Future Over Kigali.

The innovative air taxi is the result of a partnership between the Government of Rwanda and the China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC).

Rwanda marked a major milestone on September 4, 2025, by hosting Africa’s first public demonstration of a self-flying electric air taxi at the Aviation Africa Summit in Kigali. The EHang EH216-S eVTOL aircraft— a fully autonomous electric vehicle designed for two passengers—ascended to about 100 meters without a pilot. The demonstration was witnessed by President Paul Kagame, officials from the Rwanda Civil Aviation Authority, and more than 1,700 delegates from over 50 countries.

As President Kagame and other attendees watched the EH216-S take off, the moment underscored the significance of the event. Equipped with 16 electric motors for redundancy, a 30 km range, and a top speed of 130 km/h, the aircraft operates on pre-programmed routes and uses real-time sensors. Building on successful test flights in China, Thailand, and Indonesia, the demonstration highlighted the potential for safe and sustainable urban air mobility without traditional pilots.

Rwanda’s growing expertise in drone technology—from medical deliveries to this air taxi demonstration—signals its ambition to address urban congestion and enhance tourism connectivity. Officials, including Infrastructure Minister Jimmy Gasore, emphasized the importance of sustainable mobility, though a full commercial rollout will depend on further regulatory development and infrastructure investment.
